We sat down with him to debate his role in fostering community contributions, which is crucial for WordPress sustainability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-background\">The Background<\/h2>\n<p>WordPress is open-source software developed and maintained by a vibrant community. This community comprises developers, agencies, and freelancers who leverage the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostinger.com\/tutorials\/what-is-wordpress\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">WordPress content management system<\/a> for his or her needs while contributing to its code, bug fixes, and release cycles.<\/p>\n<p>Given the critical role of community contributions to WordPress\u2019s long-term success, we were keen to explore Hari Shanker\u2019s efforts in nurturing this ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Hari\u2019s WordPress journey began in college when he discovered the platform\u2019s extensive customizability. By 2016, he was deeply involved in India\u2019s local WordPress community and started organizing Meetups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Hari became a full-time WordPress contributor. It was then formalized through the <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/community\/2016\/11\/03\/wordpress-community-summit-2017\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2017 WordPress Community Summit<\/a>. But for brand spanking new corporations signing up, it&#8217;s possible you&#8217;ll not have a ton of direction on what to contribute, where to contribute, and what areas WordPress teams need assistance with. While the platform has enabled countless organizations to thrive, Hari envisions more corporations actively supporting WordPress itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ideal future is where all these corporations work together, and all of the needs of the project are met, and the project moves from maintaining to going to the following frontier,\u201d explains Hari.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledges that there could also be concerns when an organization puts many resources into WordPress and takes control of the project. But he emphasizes that it\u2019s not like that in an open-source environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody works together \u2013 that&#8217;s the longer term that I envision. Regardless that they might be competitors in business, all of them work together hand in hand. And it\u2019s already happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But why should corporations contribute in the primary place? While not every business might profit from it, Hari gives a couple of examples.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you might be being profitable by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostinger.com\/tutorials\/how-to-create-wordpress-plugin\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">developing plugins<\/a>. The primary mentorship cohort began on July 12 with 13 mentees and 13 mentors \u2013 where they worked together closely for 4 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/project\/2023\/08\/11\/the-inaugural-cohort-of-the-wordpress-contributor-mentorship-program-has-concluded\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">inaugural cohort was successful<\/a>. \u201cOf the 13 folks that we joined that joined, 11 graduated.
