Gold then evolved, and we introduced recent awards including Reddit Silver, Platinum, Ternium, and Argentium. And the evolution continued from there. While we saw lots of the awards used as a fun technique to recognize contributions out of your fellow redditors, looking back at those eons, we also saw consistent feedback on awards as an entire. First, many don\u2019t appreciate the clutter from awards (50+ awards right away, but who\u2019s counting?) and all of the steps that go into actually awarding content. Second, redditors want awarded content to be more invaluable to the recipient.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Because of this, Reddit\u2019s now ending this system entirely:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><em><span><span><span><span>\u201cIt\u2019s develop into clear that awards and coins as they exist today have to be re-thought, and the prevailing system sunsetted. And I feel, on Reddit, the analogy is closer to the landed gentry: The individuals who get there first get to remain there and pass it right down to their descendants, and that isn&#8217;t democratic.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Huffman\u2019s comments got here in response to the API protest, with Huffman noting that many users were actually in support of Reddit\u2019s moves, even when moderators weren&#8217;t. That meant that these moderators could lock Reddit users out of the system, which, in keeping with Huffman, isn&#8217;t sustainable.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which makes much more sense when you furthermore mght consider that Reddit\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/breakingviews\/reddits-golden-geese-foul-up-its-ipo-plans-2023-06-16\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">trying to launch an IPO sometime soon<\/a>, and if moderators still hold the reigns, that would impact its revenue potential. This was also highlighted throughout the protest motion, with moderators making their communities private, or switching them to \u2018NSFW\u2019, each actions that make them ineligible for ads.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Evidently Reddit management is now determined to re-establish its hierarchical structure, and water down mod controls. Whether this alternative Reddit payment offering will link into that is yet to be seen, but Reddit seems particularly motivated to reduce the influence of mods, in whatever ways it could possibly.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which is also disastrous for the platform, long-term. In line with research conducted by <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span>Northwestern University, Reddit\u2019s volunteer mod army performs at <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2022\/05\/unpaid-social-media-moderators\/#:~:text=In%20the%20first%2C%20they%20extrapolated,are%20about%2021%2C500%20such%20moderators\" style=\"-webkit-font-smoothing:antialiased; -webkit-text-stroke-width:0px; color:inherit; font-variant-caps:normal; font-variant-ligatures:normal; orphans:2; text-align:start; widows:2; word-spacing:0px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>least $3.4 million<\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u00a0value of labor annually.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>That\u2019s quite a bit for Reddit to interchange, if push got here to shove.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>And with Reddit continuing to make unpopular moves, like <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/reddit-removes-live-chat-archives-messages\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">erasing user chat histories<\/a>, it looks like further clashes are
